Greetings and salutations. I imagine you’re on this page because you’re not sure what this website is all about, but you’re curious.
I’m glad you’re curious, so let me explain.
First, if we haven’t met, my name is Dan and this is what I do. This website is something that is well outside my comfort zone. I prefer operating on a “keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut” basis. Truthfully, I don’t much care for people who fill the air with unsolicited opinions about various subjects all day long.
But then, why am I publishing aforementioned unsolicited opinions about whatever on my website?
Great question. I’ll try to answer.
Not along ago, it occurred to me that we’re living in an entirely new paradigm of opportunity. For millennia, human beings have had to begin their pursuit of riches at the feet of those in power. They were the people, in government or business, who effectively owned the means of production. Yes, some upward mobility existed, and in some free societies one could eventually become one of those owners of the means of production. But that took time, sacrifice, and sometimes grueling labor.
Today, the means of production fit neatly into my front pocket. And yours too. It’s the supercomputers we call iPhones, Androids, and what have you—they are factories for producing just about anything.
To be sure, it’s your laptop too, or your desktop for those of you who prefer a less mobile factory. But they’re all factories. Coupled with the internet, they can do anything from anywhere in the world.
That realization of the power at our fingertips got me thinking. What in the world are we all doing still going hat-in-hand to the powerful few who still operate on this antiquated means of production model? We simply don’t have to.
Yet most of us still do. We’ve been wired from birth by our schools, bosses, churches, and the media to keep our heads down and not make too much noise. Just follow the person in front you and everybody will be fine. You work like everyone else in the same cubicle farm until you reach the last dozen or so years of your life at which point you’re permitted to… play golf, drink scotch whiskey, and wait patiently for the grim reaper.
Eh. I’m not so sure.
When did that become an acceptable way of living? It shouldn’t be for anyone, and it’s definitely not for me. And I doubt it is for you, either. Otherwise you wouldn’t be this far down the page.
Which brings me back to our original question, why start a website filled with unsolicited opinions for the masses?
It turns out that keeping your mouth shut and your eyes and ears open is a noble attribute to have at a friend’s cocktail party, but it doesn’t work so well in your livelihood. Hopefully, no one here feels that my opinions are being jammed down their throats, even if they are rotten.
Hopefully, you came here because you agree with me, if not on all things, at least on a few things.
So this website is dedicated to what I’m up to, what thoughts occur to me that I believe are worth writing down for posterity or personal memory, and for letting all you beautiful people know that I’m available for hire or just for some free advice. Don’t believe me on the free part? Just message me.
I’ll warn you ahead of time that I’ll be writing from all over the world, and the types and flavors of different posts often depends on where I might be located at that given moment. I also believe in individual rights over collective rights, and in the inherent goodness of a human race unshackled by onerous rules and boundaries. Those beliefs often color my posts on a number of topics.
When I discover something I believe can be helpful to you and improve your life, there’s a good chance I’ll write a post on it.
So I hope you’ll keep in touch, drop in on occasion, and share your own insights when you can.
I’ll see you around.
P.S. If you’re curious what the picture of the bungalow on stilts is, that was my home on a farm in Malaysia for a year. Not bad, eh?
