There’s an odd habit I’ve developed over the years that leads me to uproot and move many thousands of miles away from home when opportunity or urge strikes. This habit of mine prompts a great many questions from friends and family about my future plans, current interests, and the state of my mental wellbeing or lack thereof. If you’re an American (if you’re not, read on, you’ll see what I’m getting at) who’s traveled overseas and spent any time in a major fast food chain (I’m guilty on occasion), you may have noticed a few subtle differences from fast food restaurants in America.
First, there are very few if any visible or accessible waste bins. Second, trays with empty wrappers, cups and other trash are usually left behind at a few scattered tabletops by customers. I remember standing in line at a Bank of China one day after arriving in the Middle Kingdom for the first time. Me and the other Americans I had traveled with were taken to the bank in a group by our Chinese handlers to stock up on the local currency. I stood back a few paces from the Chinese man who was leaning on the counter in front of me while the teller helped him to deposit some money. I was next in line and eager to get my cash and go.
