Dan Jones is a native of the Arizona desert in the Southwestern United States. Being the sixth in a line of Daniels dating back to the year 1830, the VI is a tribute to his family history.
Dan grew up as a dedicated competitive swimmer beginning at age five and went on to play several other sports including basketball, volleyball, and lacrosse. He developed a passion for writing early on, and some of his earliest memories are of watching and quizzing his mother, a medical transcriptionist, about words and their proper usage.
After graduating college in 2009 with degrees in history and political science, Dan set his sights on law school and began the somewhat grueling testing and application process. In the intervening months between applying to schools and accepting an offer, he set out for China to take part in a five-month volunteer mission to teach English in China’s southern Guangdong province.
During those few short months living, studying, and teaching in China, Dan discovered a passion for Asian history and culture. It was that passion that would later help inform his decision to forgo law school in favor of pursuing his dream of traveling and working in Asia.
In the summer of 2012, his dream was delivered; he was awarded a coveted Fulbright grant from the U.S. State Department to teach English and study Malay in Malaysia’s rural state of Pahang for one year.
Despite living alone in sometimes challenging conditions (rats, bats, and other creatures in and around the house were a near constant reality), Dan fell in love with Asia once again, this time on a rural ranch on the Malaysian peninsula.
He is currently wandering the hinterlands of Southeast Asia, eating too much rice, and enjoying feeling tall.
